In this specific center, refugees of Yugoslav wars lived for decades. Some of them spent more than twenty years here in difficult conditions, long enough to become first neighbors with the refugees of the war in Syria and turmoil in the Middle East and Africa. In recent years, most of them were resettled to locations outside of the Serbian capital, in so called social housings. Photo by @markorupena

Refugees use a muddy path in „no man’s land” Refugees use a muddy path in „no man’s land” between Macedonia and Serbia, near the village of Miratovac, on a freezing cold January day in 2016. They were on their way to desired destinations in the west. The so called Balkan route was used by more than a million people in search of better life since 2014. With current political situation and ongoing world crises, the borders are becoming stricter again and there is a raising fear among EU population of those who came in the recent past and who potentially might have destructive or terrorist intentions. Masked man in a makeshift wedding procession walk Masked man in a makeshift wedding procession walk around the village of Glavica in central Serbia. The ceremony of “Maskare” or “Bele poklade” is held every year on the last weekend before Easter fasting. It has different variations in different villages around the country. In this specific village, it takes a form of a wedding procession. All the participants are young man who go around the village gathering offerings from each house (in form of eggs, cookies, food or most commonly rakia) and then they go to a nearby town to "steal the bride". This ritual has it's roots in pagan traditions but over the centuries the interpretation changed to more religious and more contemporary form. Photo by @markorupena ©Kamerades

Chinese people in Tibet entertain in a tavern duri Chinese people in Tibet entertain in a tavern during the lunch break.
Unrelated to this image, but relevant for the story about the collective – Kamerades were established exactly in a place similar to this one – in a smoky tavern along a different meridian. Somewhere around the year 2010, some of the initiatives and programs from abroad came to Serbia. Bunch of young photojournalists eager for knowledge and recognition, gathered around modern ideas and strivings. Saturated with obstacles and misunderstanding of photo editors and pressed by intense changes in the world of photojournalism, the members of a spontaneously gathered cohort decided not to whine about their miserable destinies, but to step up by creating a place of freedom where they would publish their own content under their own terms. The meetings were held mostly in a tavern named Bosnia (as it turns out - everything in the Balkans is somehow related to Bosnia). Many people sat around checkered tablecloths with too many cigarette marks, discussing long afternoons and nights about the future and perspectives.
The reason says that those persistent who found each-other around the same vision of the world and profession stayed (the legend has it that those were the ones who had the strongest tolerance to alcohol and cigarette smoke), to form a collective based on the values of humanity, democracy and modern approach to envisioning the world.
Our former member Sasha Colic brought one day a long list of potential names to the table, some of which were ridiculously funny or awkward (we remember one of them being Sarma crew). One name stood out after a long and traditionally heated discussion where every single one of us fought with his life to protect his point of view – the manner that didn’t change to this day. The first variation considered a more „internationally recognizable“ version of the name – Camerades, but in the end we decided to stick to a native „eastern undertone“. Funny fact is that even today, 90% of people don’t manage to get the name right in the first instance.
The rest is history, which now lasts for already (too) long 12 years.
